Request from American Cancer Society - Study Host and Relay for Life

BACKGROUND SUMMARY:
The American Cancer Society has requested that Vienna participate in its newest large-scale Cancer Prevention Study (CPS). It is a community based study that will try to understand how lifestyles, behaviors, genetics and environmental factors contribute to causing or preventing cancer. The American Cancer Society has asked that the Town of Vienna agree to act as host for a CPS 3 community site.

The American Cancer Society has also asked that the Town host the local Relay for Life event. The Police Department and the Parks and Recreation Department have met with the Society event coordinator. In doing so, it has been recommended that the site be at the Town Green. The proposed date is Saturday, June 1st (early afternoon) thru Sunday, June 2nd (morning).

OVERVIEW:
The American Cancer Society has asked that the Town of Vienna host a CPS 3 site between September 2013 and October 5, 2013. This would be a partnership between the Town and the American Cancer Society. They are asking for a waiver of the facility fee as this is a major national study. The Parks and Recreation Department would work with the Society staff to arrange the necessary facilities. The Town Council must approve all fee waivers.

The Relay for Life event requires that participates spend the night, as they take turns walking a short route. In the past the event has been at Oakton High School and Madison High School. They are trying to make it more community involved and believe that hosting at a Town park may help. Attached is additional information about the proposed event. Permission would be needed as the event would be overnight.

SUMMARY/STAFF IMPRESSIONS:
Staff would be pleased to participate in both the CPS 3 Study and the Relay for Life. We believe both events would benefit the residents and would provide another opportunity for community involvement.
